PITTSBURG — Mike Jenner has been one of best quotes - and best coaches - in the past season for any sport at Hays High, TMP-Marian and Fort Hays State. Helped by a relaxed atmosphere and an offense that has averaged 6.3 runs per game, the Senior Legion team is 29-14 and advanced to the state tournament this weekend in Pittsburg.

This is the fourth time, joining 1997 to 99, that Jenner has led a Hays team to the Legion state tournament. It’s Hays first trip to the state Legion tournament since 2004.

Jenner on hitting: “If you guys can go up to the plate and stand on your head and get a hit, do it. Now when you start hitting .140 then I am going to start making suggestions and start doing some things with them.”

Jenner on caring: “They do care. They are not a real emotional team, but it really hurts them when they lose a game. It doesn’t matter if it’s a one-run game or if it’s a blowout, you can tell it gets to them. They are not as happy go-lucky as they are. Every team that I have ever coached at the Legion level, they love the game and if you love the game, you are going to  be passionate about it.”

“I wouldn’t trade them for anybody. You guys could play for any team I have coached, no doubt in my mind.”
