Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThe best Larks’ game I’ve seen, and perhaps the best baseball game I’ve ever seen, had to be the Larks’ win against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the NBC World Series in 2000 or 2001 — can’t remember the exact year.
The Larks were one of the best teams in the country that year, if not the best. And the Alaska teams always have been strong.
But the game started late and ended after 2 a.m. on a hot night. It featured Hays starter Jim Popp — a relative unknown — against Jeff Francis, who’s now a starter for the Colorado Rockies. Popp out-dueled Francis, carrying a no-hitter into the ninth before the Larks pulled out an extra-inning win.
The game had great pitching, great defense and clutch hitting.
The two teams then met again in the championship game, with the Glacier Pilots winning a close game in a year the final wasn’t a double-elimination.
